Round 2

So this is starting to get crazy. Even my coworkers who have lived here most of their lives say this spring has been much worse than usual. Friday afternoon and night was really intense. It wasn't like May 20th when it was one really strong tornado in our area, it was widespread with multiple tornadoes. It was a huge storm, and of course, we were right there in it again. We are staying in OKC right now and a tornado hit about 1/2 mile from us. Luckily this time we had a shelter. It was so much better to be able to run underground than to run away! We were in there for probably a good half hour. I really thought we were going to get a direct hit, the way it sounded. The shelter is in the garage, and you could hear the wind just slapping the rain and hail against the garage door with a lot of force. It sounded like a really intense blizzard, that's the only thing I can compare it too, since the wind was so hard it made the rain sound like sleet. We were standing at the end of the garage until it started getting bad, so I got a few pictures of it.

This storm pretty much defied all I had learned about tornadoes except for one thing: they are just unpredictable. Maybe I'm over paranoid, but I had a little freak out at work Friday when 4 pm rolled around, because the local stations had posted these earlier in the day:

There is NO reason to be out and about today after 4PM. Text, tweet and FB your friends and loved ones. Don't get caught in a storm.

OKC, if you have the chance to leave work and can get home before 4pm, I would suggest doing so #okwx

I thought I was okay and dealing with this, but when everything started happening again, I started to panic. I just wanted to get to the house and J, where I was safe. So I left work. I'm thankful I have an employer that will let me do that, because it seems many others didn't and people got trapped on the roads. This weather is just too crazy to play with.

It was bad in Moore too. Our house is even more damaged. The wind blew the tarps right off the roof, and with all the rain, it's just bad. But I have all I need with me; J and I are alive and well and that's all that matters! And come next tornado season, we will have a shelter, even if I have to go into the backyard and dig it myself!

  1. Hoooooly crap, Lauren! Those pictures are scary! Was the house you're staying in damaged? Are you still with Jamin's friends, or are you renting somewhere now? Once again, so glad you're okay!!! :-/

    1. We are still at a friend's house, and it wasn't damaged as far as we can see, just their fence! We will be in a rental starting Wednesday. I can't wait!

  2. Really scary pictures. It sounds terrifying to be underground and know that there is a tornado passing right above you! I cant believe it was only 30 minutes down there, is that fast or slow!?

  3. Sorry it never emailed me that I had a comment! I think 30 minutes is pretty slow. I mean the May 20th Tornado only took like 40 something minutes to go 17 miles! It was my first shelter experience so I could be wrong, but I always imagined it just came and went fast!
